How did you first get into singing? Is it something you have always wanted to do?
I used to sing along to radio in the kitchen with my mum as a child. We loved Kylie Minogue, who I remember singing a lot.
You joined ‘Dada Life’ on there single on their album ‘Our Nation’ How did that come about? any plans to work with them again?
That opportunity came through a company I was working with at the time called Hookers Songs, they thought I might have some good ideas for the track and just I wrote the whole topline and sent it back. Dada Life really liked it and wanted to use my voice as well so we ended up releasing with my name on it.
You are currently on tour with Rag N Bone how is that going?
I properly go on tour starting the 17th of October, so I haven’t started yet. So excited to meet lots of his fans and hopefully make a fair few of my own!
Your Ep ‘Imagine’ is coming out this year? can you talks us through some of the tracks?
The title track IMAGINE started with just a small drum loop, which isn’t normally how I’d start a song. I had it demoed pretty well and Johnny Ovadias (a producer I work with) helped me get it to the finish line. We also had a great bassist called Jamie Thomas who re-recorded the bass for me and it really took the whole song up a notch. He’s an incredible player.
If Tonight was a really emotional song to write. I think what I love about it so much is the lyrics in verse 1 compared to verse 2. Most interesting part production wise is definitely the guitar part on the pre-chorus. We have absolutely no idea how we got that sound and can’t really re-create it, so that makes it pretty special.
What was the inspiration behind the album?
I’m not too sure. Lockdown I guess.. at the time I was trying to inspire my close group of friends to all write EP’s so that when lockdown ended we could have an EP party and celebrate the musical productivity. The reality was more that I spent so much more time the deeper I got into creating the EP that it really became so much more than a quick experiment. I started to really care a lot about the songs.
Who inspires you as a songwriter and artist?
So many people. I don’t think I can put it down to one songwriter or artist. Every song I hear on the radio or playlist etc, I analyse and listen to what they’ve done and how I could maybe learn from it. There’s so much I want to do with my music. If there’s one person who inspired me to start writing, it has to be Ed Sheeran.
Any artists you’d like to collaborate with?
I’m a pretty big fan of GRIFF at the moment. I’d love to write a track with her. Also though…. One day I would love to work with Nile Rogers. I’m a big fan.
‘I don’t need you has received over 62,000 streams, How does it feel to know that you are getting that many streams with your music?
A bit mad really. For a song that I wrote on my own in about 4 hours, it’s been received so well. I wish all my songs were written that quickly 😅
That song took your music in a different direction is that the direction that your EP is in?
I guess so, but also not really. ‘I Don’t Need You’ just made me realise I was capable of more than just acoustic music. That maybe production could also be a part of my process. So once I realised that it allowed me to explore new avenues.
You have your own UK tour coming up,what can we expect from that?
Expect fun! I honestly can’t wait. I love crowd participation so if you do come down, expect to sing!
What have been some of your highlights so far?
The Jazz Cafe supporting Rag ’n’ Bone Man was absolutely a highlight. Also my headline show in Forest Row (a small town I currently live in). It was such a great time, gets me so excited for tour!
