Katy For Kings Music Promotions Interview

Katy For Kings
Singer songwriter Katy For Kings speaks to Music Promotions about her single ‘City’ songwriting, Taylor Swift, Releasing more music and much more.

What is the story behind your single ‘City’?
City was written after i had ventured into London for the first time on my own. I hadn’t been into the city very much growing up other than to go to concerts or see one or two shows so it was quite a reality check trying to navigate the night buses and the underground. I also met a guy there, as the song suggests. He was lovely and also an incredible musician. He didn’t break my heart though, that was just me being over-dramatic.

How would you personally describe your music?
This question is always a funny one to answer because the music I have out right now and the music im currently working on are very different. Not in a way that it would be unrecognisable, but I love to experiment as much as possible! It definitely has its acoustic roots though.

What was it like co writing with Chris Bourne?
I’ve been writing with Chris on and off over the past three years so we have a lot of songs together. City was one of those magical moments where everything came together very naturally. We played the voice memo of it on repeat the weekend we wrote it because it was just exciting from the start. It felt very much like a team effort.

What other songs writers would you like to work with? Quite literally anyone that will have me. I just love writing songs so much. Jenna Andrews is just the best. I’d love to be in the same room as an artist like Lennon Stella too. She blows my mind.

You taught your self to play ‘Hey Stephen’ by Taylor Swift when you was 14, how long did it take you to play it? And do you still enjoy playing that song today?I actually learnt that one because I told my guitar teacher I wanted to write songs like Taylor Swift. I think he did it by ear though because I cant find a version online that matches the exact same chords I recall learning. Its a weird one, maybe one day it’ll come back to me though.

What are some of your favourite songs to play with your guitar?its been so long since i’ve gigged but off the top of my head i want to say whats up by 4 non blondes, slow burn by kacey musgraves and im a believer. Year 3000 by busted always gets a great reaction too.

Who influences you musically?Taylor Swift was the reason i picked up a guitar. Folklore and Evermore are just incredible, and have influenced my current style massively. John Mayer but mostly for his songwriting. I know he’s a guitar god but i am someone who cant play more than two barre chords in a row. Kacey Musgraves too, her song good ol’ boys club just came on as im writing this. Its so effortlessly powerful, shes very clever about making satements and still having a bit of a playful edge when she wants to.

What is your go to playlist right now?I have so many playlists, probably too many. My favourite one right now is called “Your cool aunts favourite songs.” Sometimes I feel like i am the cool aunt of my family, but the only nephews I have are my sisters cats. It features songs like There she goes by The La Las, Love song by Sara Barellies and When you’re gone by Bryan Adams and Mel C.

From the release of your ‘Novelty’ EP are you currently working on a follow up EP or full album?I’m riding the single wave at the minute! It seems to be the most effective way to connect with my audience and also its super fun to pick out different artwork and create whole worlds around single songs.

Where have been some of your places to have performed so far? And where is on your list to perform at?I love Chinnerys in Southend. I say it all the time. Its just a classic. I dont really have any other answers to be honest.

Do you have any tour plans in the works?
Not right now, im not sure anyone would turn up. I’d love to support some other cool artists though. I think that could be really fun.

What has been your reaction towards the release of ‘City’ so far?Good! We’ve been sitting on this one for a while. I played it at Village Green back in 2019 and people have been asking about it ever since! Its very good to finally have it out there in the world.

What is coming up next for you?Just a ton of music releasing and writing as much as possible. I’m going to be filming a music video for one of my next releases soon which i’m very excited about. I’m just going with the flow right now!

Final Messages?
Thank you so much for having me! I really enjoyed answering these!
