Who exactly are Lotusbliss? What is the story behind their EP ‘Bittersweet”? What is their process when it comes to songwriting Music promotions spoke to them about that and much more. Full interview below.
Your EP Bittersweet is out now, what’s the story behind the Ep?
Narratively, it’s an exploration of the duality of what we perceive as reality – how our experiences and emotions colour how we see ourselves and the world around us. We touched on nostalgia, forgiveness, anger and self-doubt, often not reaching conclusions but documenting the mental journey. On a more practical level, the EP was born out of lockdown – nearly everything was written and recorded in the last 12 months, so releasing it now has felt amazing
How long did you spend writing and recording it?
Whilst we already had the song and some of the parts written for The Horror, all the others came out of the first 6 months of the pandemic – that was our focus for that initial part. The recording came fairly quickly, we like to get lots of ideas out before we hit the studio so once we were in we tracked the four songs over two one week periods.
What is your process with songwriter and being in the studio?
Generally either Josh or Seth have an initial idea and once it’s in a shareable place will send it to the other. Seth is brilliant at creating little musical sequences and vibes, and Josh focuses more on melody lines and lyrical concepts. Adam comes into process just before we hit the studio to add to the synthscaping. We’ve worked with a producer called Josh Rumble on the two EPs we’ve released, and he’s been amazing at bringing all the ideas to life.
What is the best description of your music?
Ambient indie rock might be a decent descriptor, but something like ‘Dave Grohl lucid dreaming about playing his guitar under the northern lights’ is a bit more fun.
What songwriters/artists inspire you?
In terms of references for the band, artists like Arcade Fire, Foals, The National, The Japanese House and HAIM have all been really influential, but we take inspiration from all over – artists like David Bowie, Kendrick Lamar, Novo Amor, Bjork and Jeff Buckley and Jimi Hendrix are all favourites
Are you doing any live streams until you can be back live doing actual concerts?
We occasionally hop onto Instagram Live for more impromptu gigs but I think we’ll probably save ourselves for real life gigs – hopefully not too far away!
BBC sounds gave you record of the week, how did it feel to hear your song played on the radio and be record of the week?
It was amazing and totally unexpected, we were stoked. The BBC Intro Kent team have been amazing though, always so supportive and have played our tracks quite a lot. Got a lot of love for them!
Do you have plans to tour (when you can)
Yes! We’re just finalising dates for a short UK tour in October, details coming soon!
Do you have any live dates being planned you can talk about?
As above!
What music are you currently streaming?
Really enjoying everything Rosalia puts out, she’s amazing. Adrianne Lenker’s new solo record is gorgeous too, and the new Architects record is next level too
Final messages?
Just would want to say thanks for all the support everyone! Doing this thing totally independent so every time we get a message from a new fan saying they love what we’re doing it means loads.
