Today Cultured release its December–January issue with Alexa Demie, the multihypenate actor, designer, musician and soon-to-be film producer.
Alexa co-directed the creative with renowned photographer Chuck Grant. Shot in Los Angeles, the resulting series of iconic images are imbued with the myths and glamour of old Hollywood.
Alexa then spoke with close friend and peer Taylor Russell about the importance of women in the arts, creativity, friendship, and their manifestations for the future, moderated over zoom by writer Anna Cafolla.
Alexa will be returning to her beloved role as ‘Maddy’ in Season 2 of Euphoria next year. She will soon release a debut music project and is producing her first feature film, which tells the story of her mother, a Mexican transplant growing up in glittering eighties Hollywood, with Alexa in the starring role.
Excerpts from Alexa’s interview include:
‘I think with women, we may experience trauma and pain in different ways, but it all boils down to one inner feeling within us and we all can relate. We have empathy. It goes further than just family or relationship trauma too. We, as women, come from a lineage of being abused and taken advantage of. Taylor and I always talk about a world before the one we are currently in, where it was a matriarchy instead of a patriarchy. How a society like that isn’t as far away as it seems, and how there are infinite possibilities in the depth of femininity.’
‘I have designed a school that I want to build one day to really nurture creative spirits. Immigration rights are also important to me. My mom and her family are all from Mexico. It has been hard with COVID, with everything happening at the border, but I’m lucky to be connecting with people to make changes.’
‘I would love to play María Félix in a biopic. They really hounded her to do films in Hollywood, and she refused. She only did Spanish-speaking. She didn’t feel like Hollywood was authentic. Hollywood has used foreign films as their inspiration for as long as we can all remember, and they need to pay their respects.’
For the first time Cultured offers a special pull-out poster, containing intimate portraits of Alexa taken by Chuck.
Inside the issue you will also find the latest edition of Cultured’s annual Young Artist List, highlighting 35 of the most dynamic artists at work today, plus the usual insights and highlights from the worlds of art, design, fashion, architecture and beyond.
