MATT TERRY |
NEW EP ‘CLOSURE’ IS OUT NOW – LISTEN HERE FEATURING THE TITLE TRACK AND NEW FOCUS SONG |
Each song he has released has presented a snapshot of his life experiences since his first breakthrough. ‘You Don’t Know Nothing’ provided the first introduction, a forthright declaration that there was much more to Matt’s story than had been revealed. ‘Ghost of Me’ then went deeper still, his lyrics telling a story of being abandoned in a relationship when he needed that person the most, but discovering the inner power that allowed him to say no when that person came crawling back. And then ‘His Car’ presented his most significant statement: an apology for feeling unable to reveal his first relationship with the world at a time when the music industry encouraged him to keep his sexuality a secret.
The EP’s title track and new focus song ‘Closure’ closes the door on the struggles that Matt has experienced in recent years. He has looked inwards at the issues that have held him back, directly addressed them via song, and is now in an infinitely better place. You can almost hear the pain flowing out of him in an instantly classic piano ballad, as his ever-powerful voice talks of facing his demons and now moving on for the better. Insecurity has evaporated and a new-found resilience emits from the man in the mirror.
The ‘Closure’ EP is completed by another new song with ‘Rent Free’. The experience that Matt explores is of an older lover, but one who gradually revealed the darker side of his character as the relationship progressed. Matt’s tender falsetto captures the pain that lingered long after the aftermath of their break-up. And you feel that there are more details to the story hiding in the shadows of the lyrics that he sings.
All five songs on the EP were written by Matt Terry, alongside a variety of producers: Xoro (Armin van Buuren), James Lewis (Rudimental), Grace Jackson and Takahide George (Mackenzy Mackay).
Matt says, “I am SO ready to be putting out another musical project into the world. I’m extremely proud of it. More than anything it’s for myself to lay everything out on the table and close this chapter.
I feel it will allow me to let go of some heartache as well as finding some sort of peace with the industry that almost killed me. I am so frustrated with the music industry in general. I wish it could be more talent driven and I hope one day we find our way back and remember the real power of music and voices. Let’s forget about numbers to some extent, I understand they’re important, but find the balance.
So on that note artists, we can never stop and we must continue to create and tell our stories as authentically as we can, because this planet needs us. Love always wins and truth will set you free. Today I’m relieved to say when I find myself facing a mirror, I see an incredibly strong and resilient man smiling back at me: ‘I guess that’s closure now’.”
Matt has spent much of 2024 relishing this new chapter in his life. He has made star turn performances at several key Prideevents across the UK, including a particularly big audience at the London celebration in Trafalgar Square. Sharing his story with Gay Times and Attitude, Matt’s year also encompassed a special moment: his first inclusion in the 2024 Pride Power List.
Matt’s story has taken in so many memorable moments: a Top 10 debut and 150 million+ streams for his debut single ‘Sucker For You’; hitting #3 with ‘When Christmas Comes Around’ which was written by Ed Sheeran; and enjoying a Platinum-certified Top 20 with ‘Sύbeme La Radio’ alongside collaborators Enrique Iglesias and Sean Paul.
But Matt wanted a career on his terms. And determinedly doing things his way, he became an international, multi-genre collaborator for big names such as David Guetta, Galantis and Little Mix, K-Pop heroes SEVENTEEN and Dutch dance artist MOTI. He also relished the chance to jump on stage with roles in ‘Rock of Ages’ and ‘Madagascar – The Musical’.
Now, having achieved ‘Closure’, what comes next for Matt Terry is a world of big possibilities.
