“effervescent.” – Rolling Stone
“Sparse, insinuating pop” – New York Times
“The type of crossover surprise that brings worlds together.” – NPR
Today, NYC-based Colombian band Salt Cathedral share their new single ‘Strong Emotions’, a baile funk inspired song that describes the desire to feel something different, something strong. This marks the duo’s first artist-facing release in over three years, and the first release since parting ways with Ultra Records who released their acclaimed debut album, Carisma in 2020.
“During the pandemic, we hit a point where we were not having new experiences or experiencing new emotions and to me there was a search through music to feel more,” says front-woman Juliana Ronderos, (Juli for short). “Soft music, which I normally love, felt too mellow, and intense music made me feel lonely in the experience. The song is both visceral and cheeky; I’m trying to find out if anybody feels like me and in the end, asking to feel strong emotions in the most deadpan of expressions, it felt almost comical.”
Since 2021, the band have been working on a fresh and expansive body of work, with surprises that may throw their fans for a loop, in the best way. As Salt Cathedral moves into the next phase creatively and independently, they are focused on exploring ideas of time (specifically the future) and its relation to our modern day existence through themes of climate change, social media, technology and complacency. The pair will be teasing some of their new songs later this month at Estéreo Picnic Festival in Bogotá, as well as playing headline shows in Medellín, Bogotá, and New York City.
Salt Cathedral are the genre-defying, New York City based duo comprised of Juliana Ronderos and Nicolas Losada. Celebrated for their ability to fuse elements from the vanguard of electronic music and a scope of global rhythms, the band creates an inimitable sound that is as accessible as it is adventurous. They are both originally from Bogotá, Colombia, and met while attending the same jazz school in Boston. Soon, they began releasing a series of acclaimed EPs, singles, and their debut album, CARISMA, in 2020. The music pushed against the pillars of indie pop and Latin music and attracted attention from major publications like Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, The New York Times, NPR, Nylon and many others.
Keep an close eye on Salt Cathedral for much more to come in 2023.
