Following the success of her debut single ‘Boyfriend Of The Year’ which clocked over a 1.2 million streams in a matter of weeks, rising popstar Bellah Mae returns with another self-penned, deeply relatable anthem. ‘Drama King’ proudly holds up a middle finger to toxic relationships and melodramatic partners, tapping into the collective Gen-Z psyche with razor sharp lyrics (“You follow Instagram models, one after another, but God forbid I follow back my best friend’s brother”). Backed by driving pop-punk guitar and peppered with huge hooks, ‘Drama King’ further cements Bellah Mae’s status as a brilliant songwriter and superstar-in-waiting. Listen HERE.
Bellah says, “The dating world is strange in so many ways, but something that has consistently struck a nerve with me was the generalised perception that women are the “psycho” and overdramatic ones in a relationship. It feels like a huge double standard, as my friends and I have experienced the complete opposite! ‘Drama King’ is such a fun song that I’m so excited to release, but I also hope it can resonate with women who feel they’re constantly trying not to upset someone for just living their life. I want the track to serve as a reminder that controlling and possessive behaviour isn’t love.”
With its intoxicating genre-blend of pop punk, country, and straight-up pop, Bellah’s debut single ‘Boyfriend Of The Year’ arrived after a teaser of the track blew up on TikTok over the summer last year. Upon release, the single was instantly picked up by Mollie King on BBC Radio 1’s Future Pop who gave the track its debut spin, with further plays coming from Mia Beth and Jack Saunders on his Future Artists show. Such an immediate response to the track proves Bellah’s innate understanding of song writing and its ability to connect people, something cultivated by a life spent surrounded by music.
Bellah’s distinctive writing style incorporates her early influences that range from country music’s story telling legends like Dolly Parton to artists like Avril Lavigne and Miley Cyrus. Her early sound swayed more towards country music, which caught the attention of Dolly Parton’s manager, Danny Nozell, who has acted as a mentor for Bellah, inviting her to perform in a concert series in the UK and in Nashville. Despite this early affinity for country, in the tradition of other Gen Z artists, her music defies categorisation, incorporating ever expanding sonic touchstones from her rock’n’roll roots, country music, modern pop and pop punk to create something that feels wholly unique.
With fierce ambitions, heaps of charm and an arsenal of upcoming bangers, Bellah Mae is a big one to watch for 2023!
