Ben Mckelvey Music Promotions Interview

Ben Mckelvey fresh from supporting Scouting For Girls on tour, Ben caught up with Music Promotions to speak about being on tour, His own headline shows, Making new music, Working with Roy from Scouting For Girls and much more.

How are you finding being on the Scouting For Girls tour?

The tour has been absolutely amazing. So much fun, especially after we’ve had no live music for 18 months. Everyone is on great form and the crowds have been brilliant.

As you said on stage your heading out on your own tour, what have you got planned for your own headline shows? Where can we see you live?
Dates are being confirmed as we speak! I’ll be heading all over the UK so hopefully see you there!
You have just released ‘Christmas eve’ any plans for any more Christmas singles again next year?
I really enjoyed writing and recording that song and more Christmas songs is definitely on my plan over the next few years.

Are you working on Ep or full length album?
Full length album is up next!

You said you’d been writing work Roy from SFG what was that like? Any plans for any releases with SFG?
Roy is a legend. Such a great dude and an amazing song writer. Working with him has been so much fun and I really feel like I’ve learnt a lot from him. No plans to release music with SFG, I think a two month tour with me has probably been enough!

What is your creative process when it comes to songwriting?

Honestly I just sit on my sofa with an acoustic guitar watching tv. Sometimes nothing happens and sometimes a song just arrives. It’s how I’ve always worked and I have no idea why that’s my process but it is.

Which songwriters and artists inspire you? Who would you love to work with?
Brian Fallon to me is the best and most underrated song writer out there right now. His way with words inspires me so much and his latest album was a great comfort through lockdown. He’d be the guy I’d love to work with the most.

You had your own headline show on the 6th November, How did that go for you?
(Had to cancel that one but headlined Manchester on the 20th)
It was amazing! Manchester to me is the home of music and my supporters all showed up and were loud as ever. It was pretty crazy – I jumped off the SFG tour in Oxford, high tailed it to Manchester the next day to play my sold out headline gig then got right back on the tour bus to continue with their tour. I loved it.

Where have been some your favourite cities and venues to tour?
On the SFG tour my favourite shows were in Swansea, Lincoln, Margate and Dublin. Dublin is always good to me, it’s like my second home. But I hadn’t played a lot of the cities before and they were brilliant.

How was your headline show in Manchester on How different do you find it from supporting to headlining? Do you feel the nerves more?
I don’t get nervous at all before playing. The thing is I’ve played so many gigs to no one in the past that now people show up it’s just all excitement. It’s a lot more nerve racking to play to 7 people than 700.

Are you making a BTS series from being on tour? Or do you post to your social media all that kind of thing on a daily basis?
I tend to do that on a daily basis. I give my fan club all access via a private Instagram account. People can sign up to that on my website www.bmckmusic.co.uk

From your career so far what have been some of your personal highlights?
There’s a lot to think about. But the ones that stand out are recording my first album, touring Europe and America and playing the Royal Albert Hall.

Do you have any more support tours coming up?
Not yet but we are pitching to bands for next year.

Final Messages?
Lockdown was proper shit. I’m so happy live music is back. To everyone that came to watch me play live this year, thank you so much.
