Grace Davies is set to re-release her single ‘Butterflies’ with a reimagined twist featuring Sonny Tennet. The single follows Grace’smajor success with her debut album, ‘The Wrong Side Of 25’, released in July, further grounding her as one of the most compelling new voices of the year. This collaborative version revisits the album’s eighth track, allowing listeners to absorb the track in a different way, transforming it from a one-sided confession to a romantic and heartwrenching dialogue between a couple.
‘Butterflies‘, is an incredibly moving, poignant and delicate love song, written about her grandparents’ battle with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Opening with a simple acoustic guitar, the minimal production is both meticulous and intimate, making space for lyrics that come straight from the heart. Grace sings ‘When you’re tired of getting older / There’s creases ‘round your eyes for all to see and when memories disappear I’ll still hold them dear ‘cause butterflies don’t fly away with years’.
Now, collaborating with Sonny Tennet, the track is moulded into an even more personal shape – carving deeper into the emotional intimacy between the characters in the song. Sonny’s smokey vocals and added harmonic layers wrap around Grace’s velvety tone like hauntingly raw late-night confession, drawing the listener even further into the song’s vulnerable core and reveal subtleties in the track that were only whispered before.
On ‘Butterflies’, Grace says: “I wrote Butterflies for my grandparents, who passed from Alzheimer’s and dementia. Watching them fade was heartbreaking, but in brief moments, their memories and love for each other returned. Instead of mourning, I turned their story into a love song they would’ve sung to each other in their better days – one that says: If we end up here, I will love you just the same. For better or for worse.”
On the duet with Sonny Tennet, Grace notes: “I’ve been a huge fan of Sonny for some years now, his voice is unbelievable, and I was so pumped when he said yes to featuring on Butterflies. I just let him do his thing and he sent back pretty much what you hear now – he’s ridiculous and it’s only added even more emotion.”
Sonny Tennet shares: “I felt genuinely privileged to be part of ‘Butterflies’. The song is deeply personal for Grace, and you can hear how much emotion lives in the lyrics. From the moment I heard it, I knew I wanted to be involved and approached it with a lot of care, protecting the feeling and letting the song speak for itself!”
