Pro Green teams with car loan app Carmoola in music breakthrough

From his underground roots on the rap battle scene to becoming the MOBO and NME Award-winning artist behind hits like ‘Read All About It’‘Jungle’‘Lullaby’ and ‘I Need You Tonight’Professor Green has pushed boundaries throughout his career.

Now his powers of invention continue as he teams up with car loan app Carmoola to drop the new track ‘Moola in My Wallet (Satnav Rap)’ featuring Satnav. The result is that Pro Green has pioneered the new genre of satnav rap – a concept so engaging yet simple it’s a wonder that it hasn’t been created before. Watch the video HERE.

Professor Green, real name Stephen Manderson says, “Music and satnavs are the two things we listen to most in our cars, but one keeps interrupting the other, so why not combine the two, making a new kind of music – Satnav Rap?”

The new track was commissioned by the car loan app Carmoola, whose founder and CEO Aidan Rushby adds, “Satnavs are part of the soundtrack of our lives – of the cars we drive and the journeys we take – but still not yet of our music and songs.”

“Don’t we all sometimes need a satnav for our lives?” he continues. “A ‘Lifenav’? Why not have one set to music with catchy and uplifting lyrics? That’s why we wanted to work with Professor Green, because he understands the bond that people have with their cars, how vital music is to any road trip, and the freedom that comes with driving.”

The one-minute, 48-second track sees Professor Green deploying his famously charismatic bars with a robotic female voice to mesmerising effect. Satnavs and rap make for a surprisingly natural partnership: the staccato rhythm of the satnav’s directions complements the punchy cadence and flow of rap.

Playing to the liberation of hitting the open road with no real destination in mind, the track also sees Professor Green playing on the car-loving conventions of rap, “Waving at ladies in my Mercedes, yelling howdy from my Audi.” But his lyrics (“Don’t even know where I’m heading to… I don’t care as long as I’m with you”) also blur the boundaries between technology and human emotion like Spike Jonze’s cult film ‘Her’. More important, the satnav implores the listener to “Keep on going” – a clarion call of support that reflects Professor Green’s intense commitment to championing mental health issues.

Professor Green co-wrote and co-produced the track with Benjamin Garrett (Lily AllenPharrell WilliamsMark Ronson).

This is the first song by a true rap artist to let the satnav rap too – and to give the satnav such a starring role throughout. It’s the first duet between satnav and rap – the first example of satnav rap.
