“Doubling down on his blend of hometown-pride and gutsy persona, his music is a perfect recipe for a headbang, interplaying alternative with rock to create a crash course in punchy soundscapes brimming with lyrics that read like an internal monologue.” – Notion
“Genre-breaking Southern alt-rocker.” – Wonderland
Willy Cobb’s recent debut EP ‘Country Punkin’’ and its subsequent Extended edition established the 24-year-old as music’s newest boundary-breaking outlaw, his songs sprawling between the storytelling intimacy of country and the raw, ragged energy of punk. Now Willy shares a taste of what to expect from his live performances as he shares a new acoustic version of one of the EP’s highlights, ‘Sincerely FU’. Watch it HERE.
Recorded at Sound Emporium Studios in Nashville, the acoustic version of ‘Sincerely FU’ translates the boisterous swagger of the original into a ballad of quiet, vengeful menace. And if you think the style of the session feels familiar – the unguarded vocals, the sparse instrumentation, the bohemian, artist-friendly stage set-up, and the sharp-focus of the filming – you’d be right. Willy was inspired by the original MTV Unplugged era, when it felt as it an all-time great alt-rock band played all the time, notably his personal favourites Alice In Chains and Nirvana.
Willy says, “I always was obsessed with MTV Unplugged growing up, some of the best artists of all-time have done it, like Layne Staley and Kurt Cobain. Also when I was growing up, I never did an electric show, it was always acoustic guitars by the campfire, so I wanted to encapsulate those two things at once with the sessions at Sound Emporium.”
‘Country Punkin’’ presents Willy as an artist defiantly passionate about staying true to who he is. Down-home pride, country grit, rock ‘n’ roll spirit and punk attitude are all essential attributes of an artist who is as inspired by Hank Williams and he isNirvana. It’s music for people who would rather be bold outsiders rather than compromise their beliefs.
Already Willy is picking up admiration from like-minded artists. His debut EP was produced and co-written by Jaren Johnstonof The Cadillac Three and Willy’s cousin, the Grammy-nominated country artist Brent Cobb. He has also toured with bothThe Cadillac Three and Chris Shiflett of the Foo Fighters. His first wave of tastemaker acclaim has also been secured with support from Rolling Stone, The Line of Best Fit, Notion and Wonderland.
