What is the story behind your new single Always Come Around?
I have been working with the amazing producer Stickle for some time now. One day he played me the beat and the rest of the song just flowed from there.
How do you usually write songs? is it lyrics first then the music?
I usually write my songs when I am by myself playing the guitar. Most often when it’s nighttime. In that case lyrics and music are created simultaneously. Sometimes, like with Always Come Around, though, I will write the entire song on the spot in the studio while we are coming up with the production.
Where does your inspiration come from?
Nightlife, meeting and talking to people, movies, and art.
Your lyrics have a very personal message to them, how long do you spending writing a song?
It varies. I either write a song right on the spot or it takes me weeks… sometimes even longer. I wouldn’t say the time spent writing indicates how meaningful the song is. Some just come out easier than others.
How was it growing up in Berlin? what was the music scene like for you growing up?
It’s hard for me to compare what it’s like growing up in Berlin to other cities as I have always lived here. I believe Berlin has a unique atmosphere, it’s like constant melancholy. I was exposed to nightlife at a young age, similar to most people who grow up in Berlin, and that has left a huge influence on my music and the topics I write about. I don’t remember being part of any music scene here to be honest, except for going to clubs.
Have you always wanted to be a musician?
Yes, I remember trying to make songs before I could properly write.
You have worked with different producers including Matty Benbrook, what was it like to work with Matty?
It was nice. I enjoy working with new people and I enjoy working in new cities. My sessions with Matty were my first in London and they left a great impression on me. I look forward to more sessions with him once travel is less restricted.
As a songwriter you write for other artists, how does that process work, do they get in touch with you or you with them?
So far I have only written for myself, as well as co-written in sessions for other artists who happen to also be my friends, so the process has come about naturally.
With ‘Songland’ which is a songwriter platform, would you be interested in joining that show as a songwriter alongside, Ryan Tedder, Shane Mcanlly and Ester Dean?
Certainly I would love to write with such talented people.
When normal returns and live music is back, do you have touring plans?
Yes, but I don’t want to jinx anything before it’s too early to say.
What are your music recommendations for the listeners?
Lots of Maxwell, Pharrell, Burial, Ferdinand, and RIP Swirl.
Final Messages?
Listen to Kean Farrar. And stay safe.
