CHET FAKER |
SHARES THE NEW SINGLE ‘GET HIGH’ LISTEN HERE / WATCH THE VIDEO HERE“The golden boy of mellow-electronic-pop.” – The Guardian “Pop phenomenon.” – NME “Deeply intimate music for those lonely hours when dawn meets dusk.” – The Line of Best Fit “With a Cthulhu-sized appreciation for soul, R&B and jazz, his sound is rich and motley.” – Clash |
Opening with a swinging piano intro, ‘Get High’ mixes funk-fuelled beats, irresistible soul grooves and Murphy’s hypnotic vocals to create a track that’s unmistakably Chet Faker: very much based in the modern day, but with the immediate allure of a forgotten favourite. His lyrics offer a relatable take on needing to break from your current mindset as he sings, “I wanna get high, I wanna take a break from myself.”
As we’ve come to expect from the Chet Faker project, ‘Get High’ was solely written, produced and performed by Murphy.
He says, “Sometimes you just need a break. I find myself wanting to escape just for a little while and the song sort of showed up on its own.”
‘Get High’ is released alongside a kaleidoscopic-paint-pastiche video, which depicts Murphy at (and on top of) his piano while bright and vivid colours flash in time to the song’s upbeat rhythm.
The Melbourne-raised Murphy released ‘Low’ as the first Chet Faker release since 2015, in the process starting a new deal with BMG / Detail Records. A timely track that analyses melancholy through a lens of optimism, ‘Low’ has already exceeded9 million streams, having drawn attention from the likes of NME, The Line of Best Fit, Rolling Stone, Hypebeast, UPROXXand Consequence of Sound. It also featured in triple j’s Hottest 100 for 2020.
Murphy’s Chet Faker project debuted in 2012 with the ‘Thinking in Textures’ EP, which resulted in him winning Artist of the Year and Best Independent Single / EP at the AIR Awards. The following year his take on Blackstreet’s ‘No Diggity’ topped Hype Machine and gained further adoration after being used in a Super Bowl commercial. The 2014 debut studio album ‘Built On Glass’ debuted at #1 on Australia’s ARIA Charts, while three of its songs featured in triple j’s Hottest 100, with ‘Talk Is Cheap’ taking the top spot. The self-produced, solo-written album would go on to receive Platinum certification, and earn five ARIA-Awards for Best Male Artist, Best Independent Release, Best Cover Artist, Engineer of the Year and Producer of the Year.
In 2016, Nick Murphy revealed his follow-up output would sit under his own name. Starting with the 2017 EP ‘Missing Link’, he also released ‘Run Fast Sleep Naked’ in 2019, a studio album of strikingly mutated electronic and pop grooves, and then the sublime instrumental record ‘Music For Silence’ in March 2020, an ambient collection first premiered on the meditation and sleep-devoted app, Calm. An accomplished pianist, vocalist and guitarist, Nick Murphy has performed at sold-out festivals and theatre stages worldwide, under his own name and as Chet Faker, exuding a raw and glittering energy.
The triumphant return of one of Australia’s most astute acts now continues to gain momentum.
