For newcomers and latecomers, there is no better introduction to rising Essex-artist Chrissi, than her new EP ‘No Love Unrequited’ released today, via Listen Generously/Island Records.
Having alerted the global music scene to her magic with debut EP ‘Back In The Day’ and more recently singles ‘Lipo’ and ‘Love Me In Chapters’; Chrissi’s new four-tracker continues her ongoing endeavour to captivate fans, showcasing her talents as one of the UK’s most promising young storytellers.
“I turn my pillow, both sides are warm…” starts lead single ‘Burden (Love Me So). A potent opener that hits with Chrissi’s relatable force like a rush of wind to face. Written in the two-year period since her debut, ‘Burden (Love Me So)’ sits as the younger sister to recent career highlight, ‘Love Me In Chapters’. A collaboration with producer Mike Brainchild (Sinead Hartnett, FLO), Chrissi charts a journey through the complicated feelings of unrequited love and unavailable men, over warm keys and lilting synths.
EP opener ‘Love Me in Chapters II’, is a remarkable re-work of Chrissi’s viral hit enlivened by the soulful talents of Rachel Chinouriri, and it marks her first experience working with a female producer, GG (Jayda G, Flowerovlove). Combining threads of indie and pop, ‘Love Me In Chapters II’ sees both Chrissi and Chinouriri imbue the song with their dexterous conversational flows bound together by their deftly soulful tones. It’s a song that hits with somatic force.
It’s a force that found an audience with a snippet-sized teaser Chrissi shared to TikTok the night she wrote it, back in April. To date, both versions have amassed 9.7 million views and over 1 million streams, alongside blue-tick praise from Lizzy McAlpine, Meghan Trainor, Khalid, Natasha Bedingfield, Elyse Myers to name a few. Although a perfect fit for the allotted time for a TikTok, ‘Love Me In Chapters’ was a moment from Chrissi created for private sentimentality, not internet virality as she once again seamlessly braids confidence with relatable vulnerability.
Chrissi’s sadness and insecurities aren’t theoretical, and her songwriting becomes most powerful when descriptive about the depths of her heartbreak. Across its four songs, ‘No Love Unrequited’ traces the hard edges of love, resilience and the familiar trappings of complicated self-worth while zipping back and forth between alt-pop and soul elements to singer-songwriter sounds.
“The one day I’m laid in your bed, I know that she’s up in your head” sings Chrissi on penultimate track ‘Overusing My Shoulder’. A “tale of abuse” as referenced in her own words, the song is a grounding moment on the EP, saturated with honesty. Featuring breezy vocals from Orla Rae and produced by Jay Weathers, ‘Overusing My Shoulder’ only goes further to showcase Chrissi’s impressive authentic and vulnerable songwriting at such a young age. There is no grandstanding, no attempt at hiding how truly painful heartbreak can be. It’s why her fan base continues to exponentially grow, and Chrissi is lauded as one of UK’s most promising rising artists.
However, where some might continue to wallow in their emotional scars, Chrissi takes power in self-examination and the regenerative bliss that can follow heartbreak. Upbeat EP-ender ‘Kiss My Ass’ flips the script, inhabiting a narrative where women’s voices are dominant. Teaming up with producer, DetoNate, the result is a sumptuous, pop-infused offering that shines with an earworm-worthy chorus boasting soulfulness with fury.
Born in Essex to a Trinidadian family; music is something that has been around Chrissi all her life. Her musical influences whizz across multiple genres, taking a circuitous route to the current day. From her carnival-obsessed parents who played nothing but soca, to teen years immersed in house and UK garage, to the later discoveries of neo-soul and R&B greats like Jill Scott and Erykah Badu; Chrissi’s music takes inspiration from a host of stylistic sources.
It seems as if this Essex-native has arrived fully formed and has already gained acclaim from an impressive collection of titles; VOGUE, CRACK, DIY, GRM Daily, Line Of Best Fit, NME, CLASH, TRENCH, Hunger, countless spins across BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra from Clara Amfo, Jamz Supernova, DJ Target, Sian Anderson, and support from artists Adele, Joy Crookes, Mahalia, Grace Carter and Berwyn, who she can count amongst her growing fans.
