“Melodies I only wish I could dream up.” – Lana Del Rey “The attractive simplicity of his melodies, their rhythmic, hypnotic quality provides some affinity with the works of composers such as Max Richter, Ludovico Einaudi, Yann Tiersen and Arvo Pärt, as well as that of Michael Nyman.” – The New European |
It’s the perfect context for RIOPY to embark upon a fresh chapter in his career with today’s release of his new album ‘THRIVE’, which is out now via Warner Music Group.
‘THRIVE’ represents The French-British pianist/composer RIOPY is already a leading light within the modern classical world, having achieved over 670 million streams to date and topped the Billboard Classical Chart with previous album ‘Tree of Light’ ’s first album to include strings alongside his evocative piano, a process that imbues his sound with richer, emotionally engaging sonic textures. The album blends brand new piano compositions alongside RIOPY’s takes on timeless music which has most inspired him, including works by Satie, Pachelbel, Beethoven, Fauré, Debussy and Chopin. He has transformed their much-loved melodies into cinematic scores of his own, and composed lush arrangements for string orchestra. Conceptually, the album represents the inner strength that pushes us to fight in moments of doubt or sorrow.
RIOPY says, “One day, I was playing Satie’s famous Gymnopédie and kept expanding it and from that little seed, THRIVE was born. In taking inspiration from the greatest classical composers, I wanted to show how I interpret and shape their music in my mind. The piano has always helped me find this momentum, this inner strength, and composing for strings has opened up new horizons for me. The reinterpreted melodies on this album are a metaphor to show that everything can evolve.”
In addition, tickets for RIOPY’s London headline concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on November 18th have just gone on sale HERE. The show is part of this year’s EFG London Jazz Festival. The performance follows RIOPY’s recent 10-date UKtour, which included a London show at Cadogan Hall. The tour also allowed RIOPY to provide tickets to Restore The Music UK, a charitable organisation that he is an official ambassador for, who seek to fund music education in high socio-economic deprivation schools across the nation. Please see HERE for a full list of all of his upcoming shows.
The story behind RIOPY’s life is as extraordinary as it is unusual. Escaping to the UK following a childhood spent in an oppressive French cult, his fortunes changed when he was given an opportunity to study at Oxford Brookes University, and then gifted a Steinway piano by Coldplay’s Chris Martin, who recognised his need and potential. He has since channelled his troubled past – which included drug and alcohol abuse brought on by depression and anxiety – into his music, which now serves as a source of solace to millions around the world.
When ‘Tree of Light’ went to #1 in January 2022 (after initially being released in 2019), his career was elevated to a new level. In the year that followed, RIOPY played five sold-out shows in Paris, played his debut London concert at Union Chapel, and also played across Europe in Berlin, Stockholm, Amsterdam and Montreux before ending the year with North American dates which included sold-out concerts in New York and Los Angeles, as well as Montreal and San Francisco.
