Sarah Klang has enjoyed plenty of success in her career to date, with three Top 5 albums in her homeland of Sweden, as well as winning the Swedish Grammy for Best Album twice. Yet none of that could prepare her for an entirely different journey. Leaving her twenties behind and becoming a mother with her first child became the catalyst for a new cycle of songs all grounded in personal, but also general shared human experiences.
Today sees Sarah Klang share the first of those new songs as she released her brand new single “Mercedes,” along with its official video, via her new label home of Nettwerk Music Group.
Sarah says, “‘Mercedes’ is a letter to my daughter – this is the song I wrote when I was expecting her. A promise of eternal love. And that I will do my best.”
The “Mercedes” video is just as personal as the song. Directed by Fredrika Eriksson, it compiles homemade footage throughout Sarah’s journey towards motherhood, from pregnancy through a baby shower and eventually beaming smiles from the new family. The grainy definition and washed-out palette of the video also provides an instant nostalgia for the recent past.
Hailing from Gothenburg, Sarah debuted in 2018 with Love In the Milky Way, which won Best Album at the Swedish Grammys, while 2019’s Creamy Blue earned further acclaim with Grammy nomination for Best Album and Best Alternative Pop, as well the European Album of the Year at the IMPALA Awards. While her sound had previously touched upon a mix of influences (‘60 and ‘70s pop, Americana, and an undercurrent of country), 2019’s VIRGO – another Swedish Grammy winning album – then broadened her scope to include elements of ‘80s synth-pop and ‘90s R&B. Tastemaker praise soon followed, notably from i-D, Rolling Stone and Clash. “Mercedes,” written with her regular collaborator and the track’s producer, Kevin Andersson, starts a new chapter in Sarah’s career, which will continue with further releases as 2023progresses.
