Mary Middlefield continues her ascent with the release of new single “Milk”, available now on all streaming platforms, ahead of her highly anticipated second studio album Will You Take Me As I Am? arriving 6th March.
“Milk” is a haunting, orchestral-led piece built around piano, harp and sweeping violin that uses the image of a forgotten bottle in the fridge as a metaphor for emotional worth and the human need to be chosen. The song follows a narrator who preserves themselves for someone else’s approval whether lover, audience or society, only to confront the quiet devastation of waiting so long they begin to fade. As delicate instrumentation contrasts with increasingly raw lyrics, the repeated motif of milk slowly expiring captures anxieties around time, relevance and conditional love, ultimately revealing a story not just about rejection, but about losing yourself while hoping to be consumed.
The single follows a run of acclaimed releases including “Wake Up!”, alongside breakout singles “The Feast”, “Summer Affair”, “Will You Read My Mind”and “Bite Me”, earning playlist covers and radio support from BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 Music, Radio X, SiriusXM and more. The album marks the next chapter following Middlefield’s Thank You Alexander and Poetry (for the scorned and lonely) EP.
Marking a clear evolution in both sound and perspective, Will You Take Me As I Am? sees Mary step into a more assertive, rock-leaning live energy, without losing the emotional intimacy that has defined her work to date. The album balances driving basslines and bold arrangements with moments of striking vulnerability. Drawing on her classical training with violin subtly woven throughout, Mary sharpens her songwriting while embracing a newfound freedom, crafting a record that feels both cathartic and quietly defiant.
Recorded between London and Switzerland, the album was co-written with Anna Borkenhagen, Arnaud Paolini, Gwen Buord, Marino Palma and Yvan Vindret. Alongside Bourd, Mary enlisted co-producer Jim Abbiss with GRAMMY-winning engineer Randy Merrill (Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Taylor Swift) mastering the record.
Mary will perform live across the UK and Europe, kicking off in Lausanne, Switzerland on 26th March with UK shows in Portsmouth on 7th April and London on 8th April before continuing to Paris and a run of dates across Germany concluding in Hamburg on 14th April. She has already left her mark on major stages including Glastonbury, Montreux Jazz Festival and Sofar Sounds, cementing her status as one of the most compelling new voices in contemporary indie music.
