Walker Hayes’ current single ‘Fancy Like’ has been one of America’s biggest and most surprising smash hits of the summer. Ignited by the huge reaction to the dance video he made with his daughter Lela – 1.9 million likes and 24 million views on TikTok – the track has raced up numerous key charts, hitting #4 on Billboard Overall Sales, #1 on iTunes US All Genre Chart and #4 on the Spotify US Viral 50 and has been in the Spotify UK Viral 50 charts for 3 weeks. Already making inroads globally having reached #14 on Spotify’s Global Viral 50, and with the track approaching 100 million streams, Walker Hayes is now set to take ‘Fancy Like’ to a wider global audience. There’s no pretence with ‘Fancy Like’, as Walker’s rhythmic pop celebrates a couple whose romance doesn’t need any big indulgences. As he sings, “Don’t need no Tesla to impress her / My girl is happy rollin’ on a Vespa.” And as that famous TikTokvideo proves, the song’s irresistible strut is ideally suited to dance moves that even dads can master. Walker explained the story behind the dance to Billboard: “This year was an odd one and I think like everybody, we all tried some new things just to kill some time. TikTok for me, honestly, it’s just a bonding mechanism for me and my daughter and we dove in heavy over COVID. She was into those dances and I was like, ‘I have nothing better to do than learn them with you.’ I love to dance. My wife and I met in high school, and I can’t lie when I say I was that guy on the dance floor – and she was always that girlfriend kind of looking at me like, ‘You’re crazy.’” The idea behind the song came from a similarly modest place: “I wanted to take this moment to write about my family and our life together, as we have the same dreams and goals as everyone else: and that’s to spend time doing what we love with people we love.” That spirit is captured in the new fan video, which compiles clips of fans getting into the song’s hip-shaking grooves – sometimes in fancy places, but mostly just chilling at home. It’s a set of songs which reflect his personality: “I don’t wake up in the same mood every morning. Sometimes I want to be loud and have fun, sometimes I feel more sentimental or introverted. That’s what you hear on this EP” Originally from Mobile, Alabama, Walker Hayes’ debut album ‘boom.’ saw Billboard herald his music as being full of “personal, soul-bearing storylines; rolling rhymes; and Macklemore-like cadence.” It featured his RIAA double-platinum hit ‘You Broke Up With Me’, which kickstarted a career that has exceeded 500 million streams. |
