Big on emotion, timeless songwriting quality and engaging reflections on relationships, Nick Wilson’s music has been the driving force behind the organic growth that has taken him to a 100 million+ career streams and 800,000 monthly listeners at Spotify. Yet his songs are complemented by an authentic visual aesthetic which helps to not only bring his stories to life, but to reinterpret those tales in unpredictable ways. It’s a trait that we’ve consistently seen, whether it’s in the surprise twist of ‘Lead Me To The Water’ or the cinematic quality of ‘Enough To Know You’, which was nominated for Best Pop Video – Newcomer at the 2020 UK Music Video Awards. And it’s a style which informs the new video for his current single ‘Yours To Take’, which is out now. The song continued Nick’sconsistently strong support at streaming, earning eight New Music Fridays as well as the Spotify playlists Easy and Indie Brandneu. Nick’s regular directorial team Franklin & Marchetta have put a fresh spin on the song, which the songwriter has previously explained is about opening yourself to the vulnerabilities that come with new love. The focus falls on a young couple, played by Chuku Modu (Gabriel Santiago in ‘The 100’) and Alina Allison. They’re staying in the less-than-glamorous setting of a run-down caravan, and while they don’t have much, they have each other. But an unexpected visit twists the narrative, and suggests that their choice of home is the result of circumstances beyond a lack of money… Shot on 35mm film, which gives it both a visual elegance and a social realist edge, the video shows how each person’s perception of their relationship can be changed within a moment. Nick says, “The video for Yours To Take follows a boy and a girl, falling in love whilst dealing with the weight of past mistakes that come back to haunt them. We wanted to keep it imperfect and personal, following the undercurrent of vulnerability that comes with falling in love that the song talks about. Shooting on 35mm film felt right for such an intimate story, I feel like it really solidifies the beautiful performances from Chuku and Alina. ‘Yours To Take’ is another big step towards the release of Nick’s eagerly anticipated debut album ‘Now I’m Falling’ out later this summer. Recent weeks have seen Nick share his take on songs from artists who have inspired the album, with his first home-filmed videos covering Phoebe Bridgers and Bon Iver. Although they’re notable reference points, Nick’s primary artistic strength is an affecting take on both love and loss, and regret and renewal. While the compositions vary in both style and stature (as evidenced by the tracks so far revealed, ‘Yours To Take’, ‘Say Something’ and ‘Lead Me To The Water’) they all feel indelibly part of the same songbook. Nick will return to live shows shortly after the release of the album by hitting the road with Emily Burns. His first tour of 2022 will come when he tours as guest to his Never Fade label mate Gabrielle Aplin.
