| Nick Wilson’s latest single ‘Say Something’ picked up a vast array of international New Music Friday playlists, as he added to a phenomenal tally of 100 million+ career streams to date – all before he’s even released his debut album. That achievement is one that’s drawing ever closer, with the long-awaited ‘Now I’m Falling’ set to be released on August 6th via Never Fade Records. Nick today previews the album by sharing its latest single ‘Yours To Take’. As with many of his songs, ‘Yours To Take’ talks candidly of the fundamental emotions of relationships: both the overwhelming bliss of blossoming love, but also of the awareness that opening your heart in such a way exposes you to potential anguish. Listen HERE. Whereas ‘Say Something’ and ‘Lead Me To The Water’ set Nick’s classically accomplished songwriting to modernist production, ‘Yours To Take’ is initially more streamlined. His words are set to simple acoustic guitar, but fresh elements gradually come into play: slide guitar with a folk-rock feel, bare beats, waves of distortion. Suddenly all those elements come crashing together in a wall-of-sound as Nick’s vocal reaches fever pitch. It’s an apt sonic representation of the sentiments it examines: a situation that started as a small spark has evolved into something too important to ignore. Nick says, “This song started as just verses really, over the same chords throughout, and I really liked the idea of making something that grows and grows but is actually really simple at its heart. The whole song comes from this one lyric ‘for you I give my all, it’s yours to take’, and I think that says it all. It’s about that moment of realisation that you really love someone, and the vulnerability of letting that person in.” ‘Yours To Take’ is the dramatic centrepiece of the ‘Now I’m Falling’ album. Collectively, it’s a record that represents two things: a song cycle of love and loss, and regret and renewal, with songs that both span a variety of styles but also share an undeniable unity. And for Nick, it’s a culmination of everything he has been working towards. It’s a journey with roots dating back to childhood, as Nick can’t recall a time before he was fascinated by music. From there, he has steadily moved upwards, carefully honing his skills rather than rushing to release an album after dropping his first EP almost a decade ago. Producers Martin Luke Brown (BTS, Gavin James, Sody) and Mark Elliott have helped guide Nick’s artistry to a position that feels in touch with kindred spirits such as Bon Iver, Ben Howard or Phoebe Bridgers. Nick will follow the release of the album by touring with Emily Burns. He’ll then start 2022 with another major tour, this time with Gabrielle Aplin.
