How
long have Rock Melon been performing together?
The band started in 2006, Joe joined after 2 ½ years
as our drummer.
Is there a story behind the name Rock Melon?
We was thinking off all different names, at one point we
was called the unlikely lads after the Libertines song,
then after talking to a friend in Australia I asked her
what she was eating she said a Rock Melon the name kind
of stuck it has a ring to it, its different, theres no other
bands with a similar name.
Are the gigs you have lined up just Mansfield/ Nottingham
based?
We have performed all over, our main venues are the Intake
and The Mill, its harder as a new band to get further a
field with all our equipment etc, we will perform any where,
we just love performing.
Do you have any favourite venues you
like performing at?
We love every gig its always fun... were always the first
band at the venue. We did a gig supporting the Babyshambles
Drummer, that was amazing. We actually sent Pete Docehty
our demo, we haven’t heard back from him yet though...
( band laughs) . Any gigs are welcome we love venues like
Red house were its totally rammand to the more intimate
ones, its fun playing to different people.
Do you have any one who arranges your
gigs for you or is everything done by your selves?
Everything we do is done by us, we started out booking everything
our selves, ringing up clubs get gigs, now we have clubs
asking for us, they get in contact when they have free slots
and ask us to perform. We record all our own Cd’s
, everything we do is about us, we like to be free and in
control of everything.
How would you describe your music
sound?
I guess were more punk than indie, we don’t like the
whole indie tag, it’s to polished, there are bands
out there who are described as indie and there too poppy
rather than indie based, we’d rather be alternative.
Do you find some crowds are harder
to get in to Rock Melon’s music?
It depends where we are performing, we’ve never had
a bad responce, people warm to our music. We love playing
our music to people who love it, music is our escape. It’s
good to work the crowd, we get so much energy from being
on stage, the vibe we have between us is awesome, we gel
together on stage that shows when you see people enjoying
our gigs. It’s a good feeling when your songs stuck
in some ones head, we enjoy making music and having the
crowds enjoy it its the best feeling in the world.
Is your E.P still available to buy at your live gigs?
Quite a few times we give our music out free, we love giving
our music away, sometimes we have to charge like a £1
just to cover costs, most of the time we will just give
our music away, its good exposure people are more likely
to listen to us if its free, with us being a new band.
When will you be releasing a full
album?
We may release a small E.P, nothing confirmed, just a possibility
at the moment. We are re recording our older songs now we
have Joe. We have two Ep’s out all ready, 9 tracks
to the last one. Our aim for the next year is to release
a proper full album. Keep checking our myspace for music
updates etc.
How many songs do you perform per
gig? Do you alternate your set list order?
We have a basic order, we perform most songs in the same
order, we played around with our set list until we nailed
it, we’ve had this set list a few months now, we add
a few new songs to keep it interesting, keep it fresh. Two
of our best songs we leave until the end. We have to make
sure we don’t run out of time, we get caught up performing
having fun on stage some times we run out of time, we like
to make our last song really dramatic. We like getting the
audiences involved, having them enjoy our show is the best
feeling.
Any Summer gigs arranged? Or will you just be recording?
We have Barnsley on the 6th August, were headlining sutton
Lawn Festival in august which is a big open air gig, we
will also be at the Intake and The Mill. Possibly be back
performing at the Black Market in June. We will be writing
and recording in May. Our main aim and passion is to tour
, thats our main ambition.
